Three Major Flood Mitigation Projects for Miri
Long-term Solutions to Flooding Issues

Following continuous heavy rainfall that caused flooding in several areas,
a meeting was held on 10 January 2026, during which the Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID Miri) presented updates on three major flood mitigation projects in Miri and discussed measures to expedite their implementation.

The Sarawak Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID Miri) is the government technical agency responsible for flood mitigation, river management, and the planning and maintenance of drainage systems in the Miri area.
Its key responsibilities include:
• Planning and implementing flood mitigation and drainage infrastructure projects
• River improvement works, water level control, and river basin management
• Enhancing urban and rural drainage systems
• Monitoring project progress and technical standards
• Preparing and executing drainage maintenance schedules
• Coordinating flood mitigation and drainage efforts with local authorities and relevant agencies
DID Miri plays a core technical and implementation role in Miri’s flood management system.

① Miri River Basin Flood Mitigation Project

• Scheduled completion: 13 May 2026
• Current progress: 71.53% completed
This is one of the key flood mitigation projects in Miri,
aimed at improving river flow regulation and overall drainage efficiency.

• Project siting approved on 14 November 2025

Upon completion,
flooding issues in Desa Senadin and surrounding areas are expected to be significantly mitigated.

This project will further enhance drainage capacity in the northern part of Miri, including residential and industrial areas.

🚨 Immediate Actions for Recent Flooding
During the meeting, the following actions were requested:
• DID Miri, Miri City Council (MCC), and the Public Works Department (JKR)
➜ Conduct immediate site inspections in affected areas
➜ Identify the causes of recent flooding
➜ Implement remedial measures on drainage systems under their respective jurisdictions as soon as possible
