Sarawak Considering Fixed Pension Scheme for Senior Citizens

Did you know? Sarawak is actively discussing new ways to create a more secure future for senior citizens. As the population ages, society is placing greater focus on how to ensure that seniors live with dignity, comfort, and proper support.

During the 2025 Lions Nursing Home Charity Food Fair, an important message was shared — the Sarawak government is considering introducing Malaysia’s first-ever fixed pension scheme for senior citizens.

🎯 Key Highlights of Sarawak’s Elderly Welfare Policies

From short-term care to long-term security

The Sarawak government emphasises that public welfare must span across every stage of life, including:

• Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC)

Families may receive RM3,000 in assistance during a death in the household —
a practical and immediate form of support for many.

• Fixed Pension Scheme for Seniors (Under Consideration)

According to Yap Yau Sin:
“With continued economic growth, the Premier is studying the possibility of introducing a fixed pension for the elderly. This would be the first in Malaysia.”

👉 If implemented, Sarawak would enter a new phase as an elderly-friendly society.

❤️ Strong Community Support — Impressive Fundraising Results

To support the nursing home’s operations, Yap also contributed RM10,000 through his Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund.
The total funds raised reached RM404,500.

He extended his appreciation to all booth operators and the Leo Club of St. Joseph’s Private School Kuching for bringing energy and excitement to the event.

🔍 Why This Elderly Support Initiative Matters

1. A crucial step in addressing an ageing population

New policies are needed as demographics shift.

2. Potentially Malaysia’s first state-level pension system

A milestone in institutionalised senior support.

3. Reduced financial burden for families

A stable allowance would benefit middle-income and lower-income households.

4. Building a more complete elderly care ecosystem

Government, NGOs, and the community working together to provide dignified ageing.
