New Pineapple Processing Factory in Miri

New Pineapple Processing Factory in Miri Set to Strengthen Sarawak’s Supply Chain. The SG1 pineapple stands out for its golden-orange flesh, sweet flavor, juicy fiberless texture, fast 9-month growth cycle, high-density planting potential, uniform shape, disease resistance, and suitability for export.

A brand-new pineapple processing facility in Sungai Tukau, Miri is set to boost Sarawak’s downstream pineapple industry and reinforce the state’s growing agricultural supply chain.

According to Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, the facility—developed under the ProTINAS programme—will specialise in processing the SG1 pineapple variety, supporting Sarawak’s expanding pineapple sector.

He highlighted that Sarawak is advancing toward the PCDS 2030 goal of cultivating 20,000 hectares of pineapple. This progress is supported by RM50.3 million in funding channelled through the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB) and the Sarawak Department of Agriculture, which increased planted areas from 2,100 hectares in 2024 to 3,300 hectares in 2025.

Dr Rundi also noted that downstream activities are growing steadily, with a private processing plant in Sibu producing pineapple tarts and the Meradong Area Farmers’ Organisation (PPK Meradong) entering dried-pineapple production.

For coconut, he said Sarawak had planted 9,300 hectares as of 2024, backed by RM13.4 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan, benefiting around 1,000 smallholders. Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), RM33 million will further support 960 hectares of new coconut planting areas, 345 hectares of rehabilitation work, and the enhancement of six planting-material stations.

FAMA Sarawak also purchased 352 metric tonnes of produce worth RM376,000, with exports set to begin in 2025, involving 19 metric tonnes valued at RM24,000.

As for durian and banana, 11,400 hectares and 2,600 hectares respectively have been developed. Through the 12th Malaysia Plan, RM3.09 million supported 253 hectares of new durian farms involving 257 smallholders, while RM3.9 million developed 319 hectares of banana farms benefiting 336 smallholders. Under the 13MP, RM9.25 million will support 228 hectares of fruit-crop development involving around 343 participants.
