Jambatan Marina Reduces Travel Distance from Marina to Lutong

New Marina Bridge to Transform Miri’s Landscape and Connectivity

Miri is set to welcome a new iconic landmark — the new Marina Bridge, a cable-stayed structure that will connect Kampung Pulau Melayu with Marina Bay and the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre.

Officially breaking ground on Sarawak Day, July 22, 2025, at 10:20 AM, this bridge is expected to bring major changes to the city’s connectivity and tourism appeal. The Premier of Sarawak will officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for this iconic Miri bridge at the parking area in front of the Pullman Hotel, located at the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre.

Inspired by world-famous designs like San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, the Marina Bridge will not only be a functional link but also a visual symbol of Miri’s transformation.

Once completed, it will reduce the travel distance from Miri City Centre or Miri Marina to Pulau Melayu from 10 kilometers to just 0.5 kilometers, and then onward to Lutong — bringing multiple benefits:

1. Faster Commute Time – Daily travel will become significantly quicker for residents, workers, and students.

2. Fuel & Cost Savings – Shorter distance means less fuel consumption, reducing transport costs for drivers.

3. Traffic Decongestion – Helps ease traffic along major roads like Jalan Lutong–Kuala Baram and Jalan Miri–Pujut.

4. Better Emergency Access – Faster routes for ambulances, police, and emergency services to reach Pulau Melayu and surrounding areas.

5. Boost to Local Economy – Improved connectivity can attract more businesses and visitors to Marina Bay and Pulau Melayu.

6. Enhanced Cross-Border Access – Forms part of a smoother coastal link to Brunei via Sungai Tujuh, encouraging trade and tourism.

7. Stronger Community Integration – Better links between coastal villages and the city centre foster inclusivity and development.

8. Eco-Friendly Impact – Shorter routes reduce vehicle emissions, contributing to a greener environment.

9. Improved Accessibility for Tourists
Tourists can easily explore both Marina Bay and the cultural areas of Pulau Melayu, enhancing Miri’s appeal as a travel destination.

10. Support for Urban Expansion
Encourages balanced development on both sides of the river, paving the way for new residential and commercial areas.

11. Convenience for Cyclists and Pedestrians
A shorter, safer route opens up possibilities for non-motorised transport, promoting healthy lifestyles.

12. Faster Access to Educational Institutions
Students and staff commuting between the city and suburban schools or colleges will benefit from reduced travel time.

13. Improved Public Transport Efficiency
Bus routes and ride-sharing services can optimise their operations with a more direct connection.

14. Increased Property Values
Better infrastructure often leads to appreciation in land and property values in connected areas.

15. Strengthened Local Tourism Economy
Easier access encourages visits to coastal eateries, homestays, and heritage sites in Pulau Melayu and Piasau.

16. New Business Opportunities
Improved flow of goods and people allows new businesses to emerge along the route, including cafés, petrol stations, or service outlets.

17. Disaster Response Readiness
In flood or emergency situations, the bridge provides an alternative evacuation or aid route.

18. Symbol of Progress
Acts as a physical and symbolic link showcasing Miri’s development towards a modern, connected, and sustainable city.

Jambatan Marina memendekkan jarak perjalanan dari Miri Marina atau Pusat Bandar Miri ke Pulau Melayu dan Lutong daripada 10 kilometer kepada hanya 0.5 kilometer.

The bridge will also play a key role in improving coastal access, eventually linking the city to the Sungai Tujuh border with Brunei. This new route supports broader regional development plans, enhances cross-border trade and travel, and positions Miri as a resort-style urban destination.

With scenic river views and a strategic location near the city centre, the Marina Bridge is expected to boost tourism and become one of Miri’s most recognizable structures — much like Kuching’s Darul Hana Bridge. It also fits into the state’s long-term goal of turning northern Sarawak into a tourism and economic hub.

As construction begins, the people of Miri can look forward to a new era of accessibility, economic opportunity, and iconic cityscape.
