Fudan University of China to Establish Medical Research Hub in Miri
China’s prestigious Fudan University will set up a comprehensive medical research centre in Miri’s Kenyalang Smart City — a move that signifies more than just academic collaboration. It marks Sarawak’s advancement into high-end healthcare development.
As Sarawak transitions from a resource-based economy to one driven by knowledge and innovation, the arrival of a world-class institution reflects the state’s growing potential. Miri is set to become a new regional hub for medical research and development, no longer seen as a distant frontier city.
The agreement, signed between Fudan University and a Sarawak-based group, outlines a three-phase collaboration:
1. Establishing the Fudan Southeast Asia Institute of Integrated Medicine in Miri;
2. Founding the Fudan University Miri Medical College;
3. Setting up a Fudan University branch campus in Miri.
The state government has indicated that discussions will continue to further develop these projects. Strong support has also been expressed by relevant authorities in both China and Sarawak to ensure the success of this partnership. The initiative is expected to help address the region’s shortage of medical professionals and boost Sarawak’s position in the field of medical research and education.
