In partnership with the Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCCI), BETPSM successfully held an Outreach Program in Miri, Sarawak on 23 September 2025.

A major highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Miri Transport Company (MTC) and Anthony Tours & Travel (ATT) to introduce cross-border coach and bus services linking Brunei International Airport with Miri Airport, Sarawak. This landmark agreement reflects the private sector’s proactive role in driving connectivity, improving convenience, and strengthening tourism and people-to-people ties. It also represents the first step toward the formal processes required to establish such services.

Aligned with BIMP-EAGA’s vision of multimodal transport and stronger border connectivity, the Inland Container Depot (ICD) project was also highlighted under BETPSM. The initiative aims to reduce trade gaps and enhance logistics links, with Muara Port Company (MPC) expressing investment interest in integrating seaport access with inland networks. By positioning containers closer to the border, this concept could cut import and export transport times to just 30 minutes, enabling smoother cargo movement and more efficient cross-border trade.

The BETPSM Outreach Program in Miri exemplified how collaboration can turn shared visions into practical outcomes. It underlined that within BIMP-EAGA, regional cooperation is more than an aspiration—it is action in progress.

Miri Airport was originally designed to handle two million passengers annually, but by 2019 the number had already reached 2.4 million, highlighting the urgent need for expansion. Consultants have been conducting studies since April and are now finalising proposals on the design concept and scope of works.

Plans for the upgrade include separating arrival and departure levels, expanding the terminal building from 16,900 square meters to 29,000 square meters, and increasing the number of aerobridges from three to nine.

Additional improvements will cover a new baggage handling system, more check-in counters, larger waiting areas, and dedicated facilities for both domestic and international passengers. To improve accessibility, a special e-hailing zone will be created and a multi-storey car park with up to 2,000 bays will be constructed.

Miri Airport is currently undergoing extensive renovation works involving five key projects aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and safety. These upgrades include toilet renovations, escalator replacements, an overhaul of the air conditioning and ventilation systems, apron resurfacing, and the installation of new passenger boarding bridges.

According to an official update following a site inspection, all five projects are underway. One major component involves the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of new boarding bridges equipped with a Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS), which digitally guides aircraft to the correct position without the need for manual signaling.

One new boarding bridge was completed last year. Of the two currently being replaced, one is already finished, while work on the boarding bridge at Bay 3 will commence after the Gawai Dayak festival, with completion targeted for June 30.

The toilet renovation project involves upgrading four restrooms on the ground and first floors. All airport toilets, including male, female, and accessible facilities, will be refurbished in stages, with completion expected by December. Renovations on the first-floor toilets are currently in progress, to be followed by those on the second floor.

The escalator replacement project covers the old escalators leading to the departure and arrival halls. As of now, 30% of the work has been completed—15% ahead of schedule—with final completion expected by October 23.

The air conditioning and ventilation system upgrade includes replacing rusted and leaking ducts throughout the terminal. This project is on track to be completed by mid-July.

Finally, the apron resurfacing project at Bay 1, located next to the multi-storey car park, involves replacing the concrete slab to support larger aircraft. This will also accommodate potential installation of additional boarding bridges in the future. Completion is expected by February 19, 2026.
