Air Borneo to Launch Japan Flights in 2026

Air Borneo Announces Plans to Launch Flights to Japan in 2026!

Japan, Sarawakians are getting ready to take off.

Air Borneo has announced that it will launch flights to Japan in 2026. The Sarawak Transport Minister also revealed that direct flights to Tokyo or Osaka are being explored, which means no more transit stops. If this materialises, it will mark a major breakthrough for Sarawak’s aviation and tourism sectors.

But here is something many people do not know:
Why do flights from Tokyo and Seoul to Jakarta often pass over Sarawak?

It is not a coincidence. These flights follow the Great Circle Route, the shortest and most fuel-efficient path between Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia. This optimal track naturally curves across northern Borneo, passing through the airspace of Sarawak and Brunei.

And it is not just about distance. Airlines favour this corridor because:

• Stable air currents and fewer turbulence zones
• Wide, low-traffic airspace
• More consistent equatorial weather, ideal for trans-equatorial flights
• International recognition as one of the safest and most reliable air corridors in the region

That is why the skies over Borneo have long been known as a prime north–south aviation corridor in Asia.

With Air Borneo (formerly MASwings) planning additional international routes in 2026—South Korea, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta, Frankfurt—Sarawak is steadily shifting from a fly-over region to an emerging aviation hub.

When global flight paths converge over Borneo,
Kuching is uniquely positioned to become the “Heart of the Skies.”

If direct flights to Japan truly launch, which city would you choose for your first stop—Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka?
