Yayasan Sarawak International School to Open in Miri

Delivering International-Standard Education

Sarawak is continuing its efforts to strengthen the education system, especially in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), with the planned opening of two new branches of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) in Bintulu and Miri by 2027.

These new institutions are part of a broader state initiative to expand access to high-quality, internationally-aligned education for students throughout Sarawak. At present, two YSISS campuses are operating in Petra Jaya and Kuching. Another is set to open in Sibu this year, with the Bintulu and Miri campuses scheduled to follow in 2027.

The schools are designed to enhance students’ capabilities in STEM, in line with the state’s vision of producing a technologically proficient and innovative generation.

Strengthening the Innovation Ecosystem

The establishment of these international schools aligns with ongoing efforts to build a robust science and technology ecosystem in Sarawak.

Key initiatives include:
• The recently launched Sarawak Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• The Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre, currently under construction near a local university
• The Sarawak Science Centre, targeted for completion early next year

These projects aim to create a dynamic and comprehensive environment for education and research.

National Science Week 2025: Inspiring the Future

The upcoming National Science Week (MSN) 2025 will feature interactive and engaging activities to spark public interest in science and innovation, particularly among students and young learners.

The expansion of YSISS into Bintulu and Miri reflects Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to future-ready education and further positions the state as a national leader in technology and innovation.

Strategic Collaboration is Key

Strategic partnerships between public agencies and the private sector are seen as essential in ensuring the long-term success of these education and innovation initiatives. These collaborations are expected to drive stronger synergies in advancing science, technology, and innovation not only in Sarawak but across Malaysia.
