Sarawak’s Own White House Building Is Coming Soon

Sarawak’s Own “White House”? Here’s Why This New Government Building Was Constructed

Just like how the United States has the White House, Sarawak is now set to have its own version — dubbed by locals as the “Sarawak White House.” But don’t get it wrong — this isn’t an attempt to mimic America. The primary reason behind building this new office is security.

According to Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, the current state government office, Wisma Bapa Malaysia, is too accessible to the public. This poses a significant security concern, especially given that sensitive government information is stored there.

“The new building — nicknamed the ‘White House’ — is simply a safer location for administrative operations. Wisma Bapa Malaysia can be easily accessed, so we need a more secure and private setting,” he said during a press conference following the 16th PBB General Assembly at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Still Under Construction, No Official Name Yet

The building, which is still under construction, has not been given an official name or launch date yet. However, it’s clear that the goal is to centralize and secure key government functions in one purpose-built facility.

Once completed, the new office will serve as the state’s main administrative centre, housing various cabinet departments and improving overall efficiency in governance. Its striking neoclassical design has caught public attention, with some comparing it to a presidential palace. This has earned it the playful nickname “Sarawak White House” among locals and netizens.

A New Icon in Kuching?

Located across from the newly developed Dataran Ibu Pertiwi (Mother of the Nation Square), the building stands out with its grand architecture, whitewashed exterior, and stately presence. Although not open to the public, it’s already becoming a local landmark — especially popular with architecture enthusiasts and those looking for impressive photo backdrops.

With its completion expected by the end of the year, many are wondering: will this building become the new symbol of Sarawak’s leadership? Time will tell.
