Beginning January 1, 2026, a new waste management program will be rolled out in selected residential areas. Known as “Monetize Waste” and “Incentivize Waste Segregation,” the initiative is designed to encourage residents to recycle more and reduce household waste through a reward-based system.
The program aims to cut down on landfill use, lessen environmental impact, and cultivate recycling habits within the community. Households will need to separate waste into categories such as paper, metal, plastic, glass, and food before collection.
One of the main features is a cash-back incentive, where recyclable materials can be exchanged for monetary rewards. This system not only lowers disposal costs and eases landfill pressure but also provides direct benefits to households.
The initiative will start with a pilot phase in targeted areas before being expanded citywide. Its progress will be closely monitored and adjusted where necessary.
Residents are encouraged to practice proper waste segregation and take part actively, as environmental preservation relies on community-wide effort.
The program is expected to enhance waste management efficiency and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable Miri.
