Guitar Sharks Spotted in Miri City!

A pair of guitar sharks — one male and one female — were recently spotted by divers at the Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park in Miri. Alongside them were three juvenile guitar sharks, creating a rare and breathtaking sight underwater.

The adult sharks measured approximately 2 meters and 1.5 meters in length, respectively. As the divers approached, the female gently swam away, but to their surprise, three baby sharks remained resting on the seabed. The scene was both heartwarming and majestic.

Remarkably, the guitar sharks showed no fear of the divers. They calmly stayed on the sandy bottom, allowing ample time for observation and documentation before slowly swimming off.

Guitar sharks belong to the family Rhinobatidae and are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to overfishing, habitat destruction, and their slow reproductive rate.
