80s Chinese New Year Old Street Fair Coming to Miri

A cultural market that brings back the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in the 1980s
is set to warmly arrive at Jalan Krokop 5.

Date: 13 February 2026 (Friday) – 16 February 2026 (Monday)
A 4-day event inviting everyone to step into the most heartfelt, old-street style New Year experience.

Reliving the “CNY Feeling” of the 1980s

On the eve of Chinese New Year in the 1980s,
there were no neon lights,
no grand stage setups or flashy decorations.

Instead, there was a simple old back street
without fancy packaging or gimmicks,
yet filled with human warmth and everyday life.

The air carried the aroma of fried snacks and festive goods,
neighbours greeted one another,
lively — yet just right.

“80s · Chinese New Year Old Street Fair”
aims to bring this simple but heartwarming festive spirit
back to Miri.

An Officially Recognised Cultural New Year Market

According to a Miri city councillor, this event is a Chinese New Year market approved and recognised by the Miri City Council. Presented in the form of traditional festive goods and a community-style market, it allows the public to reconnect with the cultural roots of Chinese New Year, while adding a strong festive atmosphere to the city and attracting both residents and visitors to take part.

Why Krokop?

The Krokop area is regarded as one of the early settlement points of Chinese pioneers in Miri, with over a century of Chinese community history. It was also among the earliest areas where street markets and hawker activities developed.

Holding an “old street” New Year fair in such a historically meaningful location makes the event even more fitting and special.

This Is Not a Food Festival, But a “New Year Street with Warmth”

Here, you will see:
• Freshly made and fried spring rolls and prawn fritters, full of aroma
• Fresh fish, prawns, vegetables and fruits
• A variety of traditional New Year goods
• Live Chinese calligraphy for Spring Festival couplets

Each stroke written is not just a blessing, but also a memory.

This is a street
where adults rediscover the New Year feeling of the past,
and children experience for the first time
what “celebrating New Year” truly means.
