Did you know?
Starting 1 January 2026, Malaysia will officially introduce a more educational and corrective approach to tackle littering.

Community Service Order (PKM) —

A step towards a more civilised and responsible city.

It’s no longer just about fines.
Instead, offenders may face a Community Service Order
(Perintah Khidmat Masyarakat, PKM).

This new measure marks an important shift in how Malaysia approaches urban management and civic responsibility.

⸻

You’re Not Just Throwing Away Trash

Under the new regulation, anyone who litters, even small and seemingly harmless items, may be ordered to perform community service.

This includes:
• Cigarette butts
• Tissues
• Plastic packaging
• Other small litter items

📌 Penalty:
Up to 12 hours of community service, to be completed within six months.

⸻

What Is a Community Service Order (PKM)?

This is not merely a punishment, but an education-focused corrective measure.

Offenders may be required to:
• Pick up litter in public areas
• Clean drains
• Wash public toilets
• Take part in environmental maintenance work

⚠️ During service, offenders must wear designated uniforms, serving both as a reminder and a public example.

⸻

What Do the Authorities Say?

Malaysia’s Minister of Housing and Local Government explained that:

The aim of this measure
is not simply to punish,
but to educate offenders to value cleanliness and environmental responsibility.

By personally taking part in cleaning work,
offenders can truly understand that
a clean environment should never be taken for granted.

⸻

Why This Matters

The long-term goals are clear:
• To raise environmental awareness nationwide
• To strengthen civic responsibility
• To change the habit of careless littering
• To create cleaner, more orderly cities

Ultimately, Malaysia aims to move closer to the positive civic culture seen in countries like Japan and South Korea.

⸻

More Than a Law Change — A Social Upgrade

From fines to community service,
from passive punishment to active responsibility,
this represents a shift in values.

When everyone takes responsibility for shared spaces,
our cities can truly move forward.

⸻

🌱 Do you think community service orders can effectively reduce littering?
Share your thoughts.

The post New Approach to Tackle Littering in Malaysia first appeared on Miri City Sharing.

Did you know?
Sarawak is undergoing a quiet but major digital transformation—not only in education and the economy, but also in infrastructure and rural development.

One of the biggest breakthroughs is how digital technology is now reshaping road construction, especially in the northern and rural regions with extremely soft soil.

⸻

✦ Digitalisation Producing Real Results

According to the Premier of Sarawak, the State Digital Economy Policy has already delivered significant progress across multiple strategic sectors:

1. Digital Transformation in Education

• The Sarawak Rural Broadband Initiative expands internet access to rural schools
• Students can access learning materials beyond the classroom
• Academic performance improves across rural areas
• Reduces the digital and educational gap between urban and rural zones

2. Digital Economy Creating New Opportunities

• Offers growth pathways for Sarawakians
• Opens up education, training and knowledge access
• Enhances the value of Sarawak’s natural and industrial resources

⸻

✦ How Digital Technology Improves Road Development

The Public Works Department (JKR) now uses computerised highway and road modelling systems to determine the best engineering solutions for building roads on soft ground.

The Result: Safer Roads + Lower Long-Term Costs

Digital simulations have guided the construction of extensive elevated roads in extremely soft-soil regions such as:

Lingga, Kota Samarahan–Sri Aman, Baram, Miri, Marudi, Mulu, Long Panai, Long San, Long Lama to Limbang

Why elevated roads?

• Higher initial cost
• But much lower long-term maintenance
• More stable and less prone to sinking
• Improves transport, safety, and connectivity for rural communities

This is one of the key achievements made possible through digital engineering.

⸻

✦ Digitalisation Is Transforming Rural Development

Sarawak is also using digital innovation to uplift rural areas through:

• AI-driven technologies such as KETEQ.AI chips
• Higher agricultural productivity
• Stronger renewable energy development
• Integration of rural communities into global value chains

Digitalisation is no longer limited to cities—it is now a driving force behind rural transformation.

⸻

✦ Strategic Impact: A New Direction for Sarawak’s Infrastructure
1. Stronger, safer and more resilient roads
2. Lower long-term road maintenance costs
3. Improved rural connectivity
4. Digital adoption across education, agriculture and economy
5. Faster and more accurate engineering decisions
6. Better development balance between rural and urban regions
7. Attraction of advanced technology into Sarawak
8. A sustainable, tech-driven development model

⸻

✦ Sarawak’s Future Roads

Not cheaper—but smarter, safer and more sustainable

From digital modelling, elevated structures and AI-led solutions to rural broadband access, this digital shift positions Sarawak at the forefront of infrastructure innovation in Malaysia.

The roads of Sarawak’s future will be:

• More stable
• More cost-efficient
• More technologically advanced
• More sustainable

Step by step, digitalisation is reshaping how Sarawak builds, grows, and connects.

The post Sarawak Embraces Digitalisation in Road Development first appeared on Miri City Sharing.

• Bintulu: 22 sets
• Sibu: 12 sets
• Samarahan: 9 sets
• Sri Aman: 4 sets
• Central Sarawak: Sibu Jaya 6 sets, Mukah 2 sets
• Limbang: 1 set
• Kapit: 1 set

Kuching leads the progress due to having the most critical intersections, while other major cities are steadily catching up.

⸻

How Smart Traffic Lights Will Make a Difference
1. Smoother traffic flow
Lights automatically adjust based on traffic volume instead of fixed timings, allowing vehicles to move faster during peak hours.
2. Reduced fuel consumption
Less idling at intersections lowers fuel usage and emissions.
3. Faster passage for emergency vehicles
Ambulances, fire trucks, and other emergency vehicles receive priority access, improving response times.
4. More precise regional traffic management
Networked systems allow traffic management centers to monitor real-time conditions and adjust intersections instantly.

As upgrades continue, traffic management will become more efficient, giving road users a smoother, time-saving driving experience.

⸻

Government and Local Cooperation Accelerates Progress

The Ministry of Transport, JKR, and local authorities are working closely to speed up upgrades, prioritizing:
• High-traffic intersections
• Accident-prone areas
• Regions with severe peak-hour congestion

The aim is to form a coordinated smart traffic network statewide, enhancing overall road mobility.

⸻

The Future of Traffic in Sarawak

This upgrade is more than just traffic lights — it marks Sarawak’s step toward:
• Smart cities

🚦 Completely upgrade the GK Roundabout into a traffic light-controlled intersection at an estimated cost of around RM70 million.

This project marks a new phase in Miri’s transport infrastructure and is expected to:
• Significantly ease congestion during peak hours
• Reduce conflict points and traffic accidents associated with roundabout driving
• Improve traffic efficiency for smoother vehicle flow
• Create a safer environment for surrounding development areas

Upon completion, the existing roundabout will be removed and replaced with a properly regulated traffic light intersection, allowing traffic to move in stages, reducing confusion and delays.

As a symbolic traffic landmark for many years, GK Roundabout is now set to receive a modern makeover, bringing Miri a more efficient and contemporary traffic system.

⸻

🚦 Jalan GK (Pujut 3 Roundabout) Traffic Light Upgrade Progress

The highly anticipated plan to upgrade the Pujut 3 Roundabout (Jalan GK) into a traffic light intersection is steadily moving forward, reflecting the federal government’s continued commitment to infrastructure development in northern Sarawak and its effort to improve traffic flow and urban connectivity.

The plan includes converting the Pujut 3 GK Roundabout into a traffic light-controlled intersection, while also upgrading the road from the Puchong roundabout near the Wisma Pelita Tunku to the Lutong Bridge area, as well as the stretch from Saberkas to Pujut 7 Junction.

⸻

🏗️ Site Survey Completed, Re-tender Process Underway

The project is part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and completed the preliminary site survey in November 2024. Currently:
• The Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) report is in its final compilation stage
• As the previous tender expired, the land survey and related works are now under a re-tender process to ensure all procedures comply with regulations

⸻

💰 Estimated Total Cost: RM70 Million

The actual construction phase is included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The final project scope and total cost, estimated at RM70 million, will be confirmed by value management and laboratory assessments in 2026.

⸻

This project is seen as an important step toward making Miri a more livable, smoother-flowing, and attractive modern city.

Miri residents have been waiting for this upgrade for a long time—when will it finally begin?

The post GK Roundabout, Miri — A Major Traffic Upgrade Coming Soon first appeared on Miri City Sharing.

Crocodile Population in Sarawak Surges to 25,000: A Call for Coexistence and Caution

Sarawak, known for its vast river systems and rich biodiversity, is now home to an estimated 25,000 wild crocodiles — not including those found on land — making it one of the regions with the highest crocodile densities in Southeast Asia. These reptiles inhabit around 22 major river basins across the state, including the Rajang, Lupar, Sadong, and Samarahan rivers.

Population Growth Over the Years

The crocodile population in Sarawak has nearly doubled over the past decade. In 2014, official surveys estimated about 13,500 individuals in the wild. By 2023, that number surged to approximately 24,700, reaching 25,000 in 2024. This rise is largely due to successful conservation efforts and strict protection laws following decades of overhunting in the 1970s and 1980s.

Sarawak’s lush mangrove swamps, riverbanks, and estuaries offer ideal breeding grounds for the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), the dominant species in the region.

Rising Human–Crocodile Conflict

With the population increase, encounters between humans and crocodiles have also become more frequent. On average, six fatal crocodile attacks occur annually in Sarawak, mostly in rural or riverine communities where people rely on rivers for fishing, bathing, or daily chores.

Certain areas, such as the Lupar River basin, have been identified as high-risk zones, accounting for over 22 percent of crocodile-related incidents in the state’s history.

Government Action and Public Safety

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and local authorities are taking proactive measures to manage the situation:
• Crocodile relocation: More than 35 crocodiles were safely relocated from populated areas in 2024.
• Monitoring and surveys: Regular surveys are conducted along major rivers to track population changes.
• Warning signs: Hundreds of signs have been placed at riverside communities to caution the public.
• CrocWatch app: A mobile app allows the public to report crocodile sightings for faster response.
• Regulated hunting: Licensed culling is permitted in specific zones to control numbers.
• Sanctuary development: Plans are being explored for crocodile sanctuaries to support ecotourism and research.

Conservation vs Safety

Crocodiles are a vital part of Sarawak’s natural ecosystem. They help maintain the balance of aquatic species and wetland health. However, the challenge lies in balancing conservation efforts with the safety of riverine communities.

Authorities continue to urge caution near rivers, especially during breeding season when crocodiles become more aggressive.

Key Facts
• Estimated crocodile population: around 25,000
• Main habitats: Rajang, Lupar, Sadong, Samarahan, Sibuti rivers
• Main species: Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
• Average fatal attacks annually: about six
• Protection status: Legally protected, with controlled hunting under permit

Final Thoughts

The increasing number of crocodiles in Sarawak reflects successful wildlife protection, but it also highlights the need for safety awareness and responsible coexistence. Through education, community engagement, and continued monitoring, the state aims to ensure both people and crocodiles can share the environment more safely.

The post Crocodile Population in Sarawak Surges first appeared on Miri City Sharing.
