A Historic Change for North Sarawak’s Transportation

The Sarawak government, through the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA), is pushing forward the Miri → Marudi → Mulu → Long Panai → Long Lama (MMMLL) road project, which promises to revolutionize transportation in the North Sarawak interior. Residents will enjoy safer, more efficient, and comfortable land travel, while communities long dependent on river transport or old roads will finally experience unprecedented convenience.

MMMLL is short for Miri → Marudi → Mulu → Long Panai → Long Lama, a strategic new roadway connecting Miri through Marudi, Mulu (Kuala Miri Nau), Long Panai, to Long Lama. This project not only improves connectivity but also acts as a catalyst for economic growth, tourism, and community development along its route.

The project is a massive infrastructure investment of RM3.8 billion, with the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the Marudi Light Industrial Area, officiated by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Sarawak’s Premier.

MMMLL: North Sarawak’s New Transportation Lifeline

The MMMLL project spans approximately 142 km, with an additional 33 km branch road. It consists of two main packages:
• Package 1: Miri → Marudi → Long Panai → Long Lama
• Package 2: Marudi → Mulu

The project includes 9 large bridges and 14 small bridges, plus road elevation and reinforcement in low-lying or soft soil areas. Once completed, it will connect seamlessly to the Second Phase of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR2), strengthening the northern Sarawak road network.

Travel Time Cut Dramatically
• Miri → Marudi: Reduced from ~1 hour 40 minutes to just 30 minutes
• Marudi → Mulu: Only 90 minutes
• Long Panai → Long Lama: About 60 minutes

Road standards: Miri → Marudi will follow JKR R5, while Marudi → Mulu and Long Panai → Long Lama will use R3 standards. This ensures safer, smoother, and faster travel for residents and visitors alike.

Boosting Tourism and Economic Growth

Previously, tourists visiting Mulu relied mainly on flights, limiting tourism growth. With the MMMLL road, overland access to Mulu becomes a reality, attracting more visitors and strengthening Marudi as the inland transport and commercial hub of North Sarawak.

The Sarawak government, through the Highlands Development Authority (HDA), has also approved a new water treatment plant and supply system in Long Panai, with a budget of RM15 million, planned for tender early next year. This ensures sustainable rural development and improved infrastructure for communities along the route.

The road will make agricultural transport easier, reduce logistics costs, and support small businesses. It will connect major settlements such as Long Ukok, Long Linei, and Long Panai, improving school access, community safety, and basic services.

The MMMLL road is expected to be completed by 2030, providing seamless connectivity from coastal towns to inland communities, aligning with Sarawak’s Post-Pandemic Development Strategy 2030.

The construction of the 740-meter bridge began on October 20, 2022, and was finished by October 18, 2024.

Upcoming developments include new roads to improve travel between Miri and Marudi, shorten the distance, and connect additional areas. Key projects include a 76 km road to Mulu, a 26 km stretch from Long Panai to Long Lama, and the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR) Phase Two. Local leaders highlighted future plans for Marudi, including waterfront projects, new hotels, and additional roads to increase regional connectivity.
